7 Orlando Family Travel Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

May 1, 2025 • 6 min read

After years of helping families navigate Orlando vacations, we've seen the same mistakes repeated over and over. Here's how to avoid the most common pitfalls and make your family trip truly magical.

Mistake #1: Overscheduling

The number one mistake families make is trying to see everything. You cannot do all of Orlando's theme parks in a week, especially with young children. Choose your priorities and embrace the magic of doing less, better.

Instead of cramming in four parks in four days, consider spending two days at your favorite park. You'll actually enjoy it more.

Mistake #2: Skipping Rest Days

Build at least one full rest day into your Orlando itinerary. Spend it at your resort pool, exploring Disney Springs, or simply relaxing. Your children (and you) will be much happier at the parks the following day.

Mistake #3: Ignoring the Weather

Orlando is hot. Like, really hot. Plan your park days to arrive at opening, take a midday break, and return in the evening when temperatures drop. Hydrate constantly.

Also be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms, especially in summer months. They usually pass quickly, but having a plan helps.

Mistake #4: Not Planning Childcare

Waiting until you arrive to think about babysitting means you might not find available care. Book your vacation nanny weeks in advance, especially during peak seasons like spring break, summer, and the holidays.

Mistake #5: Forgetting About Food

Pack snacks. Theme park food is expensive and the lines are long. Familiar snacks also help comfort tired, overstimulated toddlers.

Consider these easy options:

  • Goldfish crackers or pretzels
  • Applesauce pouches
  • Granola bars
  • Fruit snacks
  • Cheese sticks (with an ice pack)

Mistake #6: No Backup Plan

Rain happens. Meltdowns happen. Have a backup plan for each day that doesn't involve the parks — indoor play areas, aquariums, or simply a movie day at the resort.

Some great backup options include:

  • SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium
  • Crayola Experience
  • LEGOLAND Discovery Center
  • Resort pool and splash pad time
  • Disney Springs or Universal CityWalk (free to visit)

Mistake #7: Expecting Perfection

The Instagram-perfect Disney moment rarely happens naturally with toddlers. Release expectations and embrace the beautiful chaos of family travel.

Some of the best memories come from unexpected moments — the spontaneous dance party, the ice cream that melted everywhere, the character interaction that went hilariously wrong. Let go of perfection and enjoy the adventure.
